Queen break UK chart records: Queen's 'Greatest Hits' broke records in Britain

Queen made UK chart history, as they became the first band to sell seven million copies of an album.

One in four UK households have their first 'Greatest Hits' collection, from 1981, as announced by the Official UK Chart Society.

The disk, which includes classical songs, including 'We Will Rock You' and 'Bohemian Rhapsody', has been a perennial best-seller for years and recently completed its 1,000th week in the UK album chart.

Queen's guitarist, Brian May, according to the BBC, called the recent achievement "good news".

"No album in history has ever achieved this before," he said in a statement. "Thanks, we appreciate it" he added.

The band's drummer Roger Taylor noted: "The British public and their boundlessly exquisite taste have made Greatest Hits the best-selling album in history". "Thank you very much, it is an honor for us!he added.

“When it was first released the 1981, the albums with songs from the entire career of artists, such as Greatest Hits, were relatively rare, there were only really great bands," noted Martin Talbot, CEO of Official Charts.

Queen's second album 'Greatest Hits', which was released in October 1991, a month before the death of singer Freddie Mercury – it is also the tenth best seller in the UK, amounting to four million copies.
