Sunscreens, How and When they may be used; Myths and Truths!!

Alexandros Yatzidis – M.D

We have learned that we must use sunscreen, but we don't know how to use them and when!!…..
Despite what many may think, choosing the right sunscreen, it is an extremely important case, since in addition to our appearance, it can also seriously affect our health, especially in this day and age where experts are warning about how dangerous solar radiation can prove to be.
So here's how you can choose the right sunscreen according to your skin type:

Type 1: Very light skin, which does not darken, but it burns very easily. People belonging to this category usually have fair hair and freckles.

Appropriate sunscreen: pointers from 10-15.Type 2: Light colored skin, which is quite sensitive and tans very little, while it burns relatively easily.

Appropriate sunscreen: indicators from 15-10.Type 3: It is less light skin, more resistant to the sun and gradually darkens.

Appropriate sunscreen: pointers from 10-15.Type 4: It is the skin that always tans, while sometimes - not often- he gets a burn. It could be described as medium dark.

Appropriate sunscreen: 6-10.Type 5: This skin always tans and does not get burned, except in extreme situations. They are the so-called "dark" people.

Appropriate sunscreen: pointers from 1-6.
We all know the harmful effects that prolonged exposure to the sun can have. That is why it is very important to use sunscreen during the summer months and beyond. Sunscreen protects our skin from the burns caused by the sun, photoaging (a condition caused by UVA rays resulting in premature aging of the skin), skin cancer and dehydration. Normal exposure to the sun is necessary. The sun's rays stimulate the production of vitamin D, which is needed to have strong bones.

The rays considered dangerous are UVA and UVB. To protect yourself, you should not be exposed to the sun during the midday hours (12.00-16.00pm) – during this period the sun's rays are extremely harmful. If you can't do otherwise, look for shady places or sit under an umbrella.
Sunscreen is essential at all times. Don't be fooled if it's cloudy. Clouds don't block harmful rays from reaching your skin.

What is the SPF index?;

SPF refers to a sunscreen's ability to block UVB rays, which cause sunburns. On the other, it cannot block UVA rays which are responsible for skin aging.

Myth No. 1: The sunscreen offers full protection
The reality: A sunscreen with an SPF 15 can block it 94% of UVB rays, a sunscreen with SPF 30 the 97% while one with SPF 45 the 98% of UVB. Which means that no sunscreen offers full coverage and protection.

Myth No. 2: If I use waterproof sunscreen I won't need to reapply it

The reality: Whether it's a waterproof sunscreen or not, in any case you should renew it, at least every 2 hours.

Myth No. 3: If I use sunscreen with an SPF 30+, I can sit in the sun twice as long

The reality: High SPF sunscreens block more UVB rays but not UVA which cause deeper skin damage. Scientists argue that the ideal protection index (SPF) is the pointer 15, only if used correctly.Because, most of us, they are bored with the whole sunscreen process, it would be good to use a sunscreen with a protection index 30.

If you finally decide to use a smaller marker you should spread it everywhere and carefully. Never forget areas like the lips, ears and feet.

And do not forget:

  • Avoid sun exposure in between 12 at noon and 4 afternoon, i.e. the hours when the sun's rays are vertical and strong.
  • Always use a sunscreen with an SPF suitable for your skin type.
  • Apply sunscreen to dry skin, for better absorption.
  • Wear sunscreen even when you are in the sea, as the sun's rays penetrate the water.
  • Renew your sunscreen at regular intervals, and especially every time you sweat or dive into the sea.
  • You also need sunscreen when you are under the beach umbrella, since the sun's rays are reflected on the sand.
  • If you already have a tan, you can choose a sunscreen with a lower index, but don't stop using it completely.
