Practical Tips for Saving Water in Mykonos

Water consumption is not inelastic and can be reduced with appropriate information and formation of environmental consciousness……..

I. For the Citizen - Private at HOME, in KIPO etc.
Up to 50% water saving can reach the home, if we follow some practical guidelines…

§ We regularly check the plumbing at home for early diagnosis & leak repair – damage

§ We don't leave the tap open, when we brush your teeth, wash your hands or shave. (With the tap on, the waste of water can reach the 20 liter!)

§ Never a full bathtub! We prefer a shower 4-5 thin, without the water running unnecessarily. (The 20% of a household is used in the bathroom!)

§ We apply special water-saving mechanisms to your toilet cistern and do not flush it unnecessarily.

§ We use the washing machines and dishwashers only when they are full and we prefer them to hand washing, setting them in the financial program. (Indicative hand wash required 63 liters at a time, while a modern dishwasher only 15 liters per cycle!)

§ We urge and advise children not to play with the water in the bathtub, in the yard or anywhere else.

§ We water our flowers and plants with a sprinkler in the early morning or late afternoon when evaporation is limited.

§ With the watering hose they leave 18 liters per minute. But with a bucket, we can wash the car or water more precisely.

§ The cleaning of verandas and other outdoor areas can be done with a sweep and mop.

§ We reuse body and face towels. This reduces the volume of unwashed clothes and ultimately the uses of the washing machine. We insist on this even when we stay in hotels or tourist accommodation. We ask that towels or sheets be changed, only when we judge it.

§ We take initiative and immediately call the relevant authorities for any leakage and loss of water on the roads. We don't wait for someone else to do it.

II. For the Grower: amateur farmer & Farmer § We avoid crops with high water requirements.

§ We use modern irrigation systems, with a particular preference for using a drip irrigation system. (The performance of this irrigation method reaches 95%!)

§ We regularly check and maintain the irrigation equipment to reduce water losses to the minimum possible.

§ We choose the appropriate irrigation schedules based on the actual water needs of the various crops.

§ Avoid watering when there are strong winds and high temperatures, factors that aid in the evaporation of water. It is good to irrigate at night or during cool hours.

§ We collect and utilize rainwater wherever possible.

III. For the students
If we find a leak in a cistern or faucet, we inform our teachers so that they can take care of its repair.

We make sure to spread the word to the rest of the children at school or in our neighborhood about the ways we know about saving water.

We make posters! We design on plain paper one or more posters about saving water at school and place them in the school corridors, in order to motivate the rest of the students to consume less water.

IV. For the competent authorities - public services
Whether water saving techniques are applied or not, staff information and awareness is a key factor in the success of a water waste reduction program.

We systematically monitor water consumption bills and regularly check for any leaks in the network.

We install water supply switches with photocells. They ensure maximum water saving, since the faucet closes automatically when the water is not used. These systems have a high cost and their use is not recommended in offices with a small number of employees or residences. The saving can reach the 70-80%.

From the cisterns, preferably those in which the flow depends on the time the button is pressed. Saving water in this way can reach up to 70%. In office spaces, this translates on average into savings 90 liters of water per toilet per day.
